故事讲述一个10岁的男孩由于缺乏家庭的关爱而离家出走，然后不断地展转被抚养孤儿的家庭收养。在一个工人阶级的家庭里，当他发现自己的淘气反叛惹恼了他们并且计划要抛弃他的时候，甚至以掐死他们家的猫以示愤怒。最后他被一个年长友善的老婆婆收养，老婆婆的善良和耐性让他乖了下来。可是在一次捣蛋的时候，他被警察逮捕了。A ten-year-old boy feels unwanted when his mother places him in a home for wayward children. He goes to a foster home where a family of workers finds him to be too much for them. When the unruly child discovers the family plans to give up on him, he kills their daughter's cat in retaliation. He is sent to another home where he is cared for by an elderly couple. The boy takes to the wife's elderly mother, who reaches out to the disturbed boy. His deliberate disobedience lessens somewhat in his new environment, but he is arrested after throwing bolts at cars from a bridge. The boy tries to overcome his mother's rejection and struggles to boost his self-image in this childhood drama.
